PIN B538.05 Steel Repairs and Seismic Upgrades of the South Grand Island Bridges
New Project
The Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Erie and Niagara Counties, is proposing to amend the 2023-2027 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) by adding one (1) new project.
The project will perform structural steel repairs and install seismic upgrades for the South Grand Island Bridges. The project will also involve the upgrade of permanent access devices for conformance with OSHA standards.
Also investigated will be rehabilitation of the closed sidewalk on the Southbound bridge, wearing surface frictional improvements, and shared-use path improvements on the bridge approaches.
This project will have a total cost of $84.75M. Fiscal constraint is maintained.
$39M from FYY 2023 FHWA Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative, Efficient, and Cost- Saving Transportation (PROTECT) Discretionary Grant award
$45.75M from New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA)
The let (obligation) is scheduled for 12/10/25
The GBNRTC is currently in consultation with the Interagency Consultation Group for Air Quality Conformity (ICG) for a Transportation Conformity determination. Exemption Code A19 - Widening narrow pavements or reconstructing bridges (no additional travel lanes).
Public comments will be received for 30 days from 4/3/25 until Close of Business (COB) on 5/2/25.
